Salmon Oil for Dogs - What’s The Dealio?

Salmon Oil for Dogs – What’s The Dealio?

by Asia K.

Yes dear dog owner, you should absolutely supplement with salmon oil for dogs. Salmon oil is part of my trio of recommended daily supplements – along with probiotics and high quality multi-vitamins. Not only will your dog have a super shiny coat but the health benefits are through the roof. Talk about saving big time on dog vet bills!

When Halle was a puppy she went through a host of health problems. I’m talking about ear infections, sudden rashes, prolonged diarrhea and pimples on her chin. Her joy-de-vivre disappeared. She had hot spots and some serious skin irritations. Poor thing had a bunch of issues.

We switched her to a more Holistic natural diet with added fresh raw foods and proteins. We put her on a Holistic multi-vitamin and added salmon oil for dogs to her mealtimes. The most significant visual change was her coat. She went from a flat gray to silky stainless steel. “OMG I love your dog’s color”! We’re talkin’ I-can-almost-see-my-reflection silver gray. But the greatest thing was that our happy bouncy puppy was back in full action. Or should I say back to her weim-trixiness!

Salmon Oil for Dogs is pure gold!

I kid you not. ALL her problems went away. In fact to this day, 4 wonderful years later, we only see her Holistic Vet on an as-needed basis. Maybe once or twice a year max.

Fish oils are a huge part of your dog’s general wellbeing – very huge! They’re kinda like the various oils you need to keep your car running smoothly. Fish oils are going to make sure your dog remains at his very bestest. Salmon oil is so easy to use plus your dog will love the taste.

“It does wonders for my Ferrari Body” – Halle

The right fish oils are excellent sources of essential fatty acids. You want to look for the winners, which are cold water fish like salmon, mackerel, halibut and herring. They’re all amazing. Additional good sources for fish oil are sardines and lake trout. Fish oils are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids called EPA and DHA These help in reducing inflammation in your dog’s body and promote a general sense of happiness and optimum health.

It’s also great to know that your dog’s metabolism immediately puts the omega rich fatty acids found in the fish oil to good use. That’s why you see results so quickly.

Don’t rely on just any kind of fish oil for your dog. It’s important to check the ingredient list and guaranteed analysis so you know exactly what’s up. There are plenty of different types of fish oil blends out there. Go with the best possible one that gives you the maximum amount of benefits…

Enter Salmon Oil for Dogs.

Salmon oil is your number 1 choice. It’s important to note that salmon oil has the perfect balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6. What you’re looking for are high DHA and EPA values. You want them to be at a total of 400 or more. The closer the DHA and EPA value is to the total oil amount (generally its 1000 mg) the higher the quality.

Before I get into the different brands and stuff I have another important note to share with you:

Salmon oil fortified dog foods don’t remotely compare to salmon oil supplements.

Why? Here’s the deal:

Dog foods that include Omega 3 fatty acids in their formula have already lost quite a bit of their beneficial properties. They’ve been already exposed to heat, light and air so their active ingredients have been broken down. Consider the cooking process (lotsa heat being used here) plus the packaging, transportation and storage. Not to mention that every time you open your dog’s food bag, the value diminishes even further.

Supplementing your dog’s diet with natural fish oil is much more effective.

Aside from the fish smell, salmon oil is super easy to use. Start your salmon oil for dogs dosage gradually. Give half the portion for breakfast and one for supper. That way things are more balanced. Depending if you are using gelcaps or an oil-based formula the standard recommended dosage is as follows:

One 1,000 mg fish oil that contains a minimum of 300 mg of combined DHA and EPA per 10 pounds of dog body weight daily.

Since both of our dogs are in optimum health and shape, I give them half of their recommended dosage each day. For Charlie, I give him almost 1 pump of Grizzly Salmon Oil while Halle gets 2. They both love it so much that they lick their bowls ultra clean every time!

“Wha? I lick my bowl cause my it’s tasty. I didn’t even know there was Salmon Oil in there…” – Charlie

Second Important Note!

When supplementing your dog’s diet with salmon oil or any other types of oil, always pair it with a natural Vitamin E capsule.

Here’s why. Fish oil, unfortunately, tends to deplete your dog’s body of Vitamin E. It’s essential to add E when using salmon oil. We give our pups a great brand called Natural Factors.

The IU amounts vary greatly depending on the size of your dog.
Here is my recommended dosage for Vitamin E supplementation:

    - 0 to 25 pounds – 100 IU
    - 25 to 50 pounds – 200 IU
    - 50 to 75 pounds – 400 IU
    - 75 to 100 pounds – 600 IU

Say you have a small dog like Charlie who weighs 14 lbs. Sometimes a high quality 100 IU is hard to find. I typically buy a 200 IU and I punch a tiny hole in the gelcap and share it between Halle and Charlie.

Salmon Oil for Dogs Review

Here are your best salmon oil for dogs options:

    Grizzly Salmon Oil
Grizzly is our top choice. Comes highly recommended by breeders. Our pups love the taste. They use true wild Alaskan salmon.

    Kronch Salmon Oil for Dogs
Your second best choice. Their salmon is extracted by cold pressing fresh salmon at low temperatures – maintaining and preserving the optimum freshness and effectiveness of the fatty acids.

Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil for Dogs
A very good choice. Their pure Alaskan salmon oil is just that. It contains no artificial flavors, colors or fillers.

Salmon Oil for Dogs Side Effects

Like with any product, generally, if you follow the label instructions you shouldn’t have any problems with giving your dog salmon oil.

Heavy metals found in fish are most harmful to young puppies. I would supplement a puppy’s diet with salmon oil gradually. Use half of the recommended dosage for your puppy and give it with meals 1 or 2 times a week.

Gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea are some common side effects. Burping, heartburn, bloating, stomach upsets and indigestion can also occur.

If you notice your dog’s having a hard time with the salmon oil (maybe he doesn’t want to eat it or he has bouts of diarrhea) stop using it immediately and see if his condition improves. Carefully reintroduce it back at a smaller dosage and go from there. Consulting with your vet is always a good idea.

Salmon oil has been a lifesaver for us. The benefits are enormous, how can you not use it?

I would love to hear from you. What’s your experience with salmon oil for dogs? Which brand to you swear by? Please leave your comments down below.

Interesting … we do supplement fish oils and we do supplement vit E (same brand as you do, actually) but we don’t use salmon oil per se. We use safflower oil for omega 6 and combination of Aller G-3 and Urban Wolf’s fish oil capsules.

I use salmon oil for my pit bull and it works wonders. When she’s not taking it then she gets really patchy and dandruffy (dunno if that’s a word). However, a few days after taking her pills and her coat looks wonderful. It’s like magic.

Mahalo for the info. I’m going to to try it out immediately on my Weimer Zelda. You know her from K9 Coach/San Diego Dog Training. 7 months sold it all and moved to the Big Island, Hawaii.

Incredibly happy about that but with it comes getting used to the heat and humidity and as you are well aware Weimers tend to have skin issues etc. Zelda has started to itch and when she scrapes herself on the lava while out swimming or hiking she will lick it to nearly a hotspot (I stop her) because of the all over itching problem she is having. From my research this is not from food allergy but more for the overgrowth of yeast which happens to humans as well in the adaptation process of living in the tropics.

Will keep you updated on the Salmon oil and vitamin e and plan to connect with you more as I have done much research on holistic dog care over my life and have had the time to really delve into it since moving to Hawaii.

Aloha Wags!
