Curious Dog Grocery Snoop

Curious Dog Grocery Snoop!

by Asia

Halle makes me laugh sometimes because she’s such a notoriously curious dog! Her nose is her ‘commander in chief’ and she just follows wherever sweet smells take her.

Being a Weimaraner with a strong hunting drive, our poor little girl occasionally just can’t help it. Especially when Vish and I come home from the grocery store, she’ll put on her inspector hat and jump right in. Halle will make sure to quickly greet us and display proper manners with a rapid kiss and turbo cuddle and then quickly hop over to the market totes for some serious snooping and investigating.

Our Weim immediately soaks in what’s on the menu for this week, swiftly analyzing everything.

“I smell pasta – not for me, but I do like fresh tomatoes! Oh bread, boring! Ha jackpot! Mom’s making a stir fry which guarantees some green and red peppers in my belly, perfect!” } Halle

Her main job is to locate the immediate goods – the fresh produce. That’s when her true Weimaraner super hunter comes out, pointing away with anticipation. Our girl knows what’s good for her. So cute, she’s such a pro. Our curious dog then practically topples the fruits & veggies tote to get that extra last sniff at the very bottom. Making sure that bag is fully secured and moving on to the next. LOL!

And if by any chance the lettuce manages to stick out, it’s no match for our pup. Halle will go for a quick but very discrete taste without hesitation. She just can’t resist and then runs towards her base, which is pretty much the living room carpet to fully enjoy her fresh find. Of course it’s then followed by a “Nope, Halle. That’s not very nice!” which leads to her getting embarrassed and coming up to us with sincere apologies.

Sometimes if we happen to buy something new and tasty, Halle turns into an automatic pushy sniffing dog. Kinda like “Move Mom & Dad, I gotta check this one out up close!”

So nosy. I guess it’s the Weimaraner ways.

Next Halle transforms into a supervisor and positions herself smack in the middle of the kitchen at a good vantage point, making sure that all the food and goodies are stored in their proper place. Keeping a steady and serious eye on all movements. When it’s time to refill the pantry with dry goods, yup – the pushy sniffing dog returns, double checking the totes one more time making sure we bought her favorite sardines.

She’s very picky while doing her rounds. She tends to ignore the toilet paper and Scott towels. They aren’t fun until we empty them out and give her the wrappings for a quick (monitored) 30-second burst of excitement. That really gets her going!

Empty cereal boxes are even more exciting.

After everything is neatly put away and the totes are folded and stacked away, our furry monkey finally goes back to her base for a good rest. A good stretch followed by a nice long yawn and she’ll roll into a bagel for some good shut eye. It’s hard being the curious dog grocery snoop. But someone’s gotta do it!

Does your pup go around the house snooping around for whatever catches his fancy, nose-deep in the closets, the laundry room, even in your purse? Then my friend, you have a snooper in the house. For Halle it’s her most fave activity along with playing ball and snoozing!

This is one of Kansas’ favorite things to do! Leo gets in on the action, too, and even the cats (who were around long before the dogs) used to love to investigate the groceries! They don’t get much opportunity, anymore, as the dogs beat them to it, though.

Kansas always goes straight for the meat products. She doesn’t care for much else; Leo wants to sniff in every bag.

Though this behavior surely encompasses many breeds I think it is a Weimaraner thing!

Zelda loves to look in grocery bags, gym bags and anything new we bring in the house. She is also well known to go check out every room she can go into when going to friends & families homes. My sister nicknamed her “Snoop”!

I find it quite endearing :)

YUP!!!!
You’ve got that right :)

Zelda (we LOVE her name btw) is toooo cute!
That’s a perfect nickname for your girl – ‘Snoop’!

Ditto for Halle.
Sometimes she can get a bit rude. She’ll walk right into my Mom’s house, give her quick light stair and nod, Like “Hey, how’s everything?”

Followed by a sigh and an immediate premises inspection, checking each room, double sniffing all the corners and tripple inspecting all new items in the house – what a snoop!

Weims are so special – love’em.

Does Zelda ever come up to you and sniff you relentlessly from head to toe and all around, figuring out where you’ve been, when ever you come home?

Hi Jennifer, Leo, Kansas and the kitteys :)

Oh my Jennifer, you’ve got yourself a ‘snoop-troop’ LOL
Have they ever stolen or taken a bite out of anything interesting in the grocery bags?

So funny how you describe that once all over sniff thing she does. When she does find “point of contact” if there’s been another dog I always get an extra nudge of the nose there…

“Hey who’s that other dog… it’s supposed to be all me!”

She’s the best. She’s definitely my Weimer :)

Heya JT yeah, Halle just needs to make sure that the entire area is secure first LOL.

I’m telling ya, Zelda and Halle would be BGDF’s :)
These two are soooooooooo similar!
Is Zelda your 1st Weim?

Halle and Zelda would have a language and secrets only those two would know for sure!

Zelda is my first Weimaraner. She’s 5 now. Have loved all of her stages in life. Her personality continues to amaze me. I’ve trained several Weims but none are like my Zelda as I’m sure no other Weimer is like your Halle.

Is Halle your first Weim?

Wag, wag wag… as my Z does all the time :)

Nope. Nobody’s ever taken a bite out of anything! The dogs know better- I can even fix a plate of food for myself leave the room and when I come back it’s untouched.

Can’t say the same for the cats. They are AWFUL about getting on countertops (where they KNOW they are NOT allowed, and this has been the rule for the entire 10 years of their lives, though every time we move to a new home they seem to think the old rules no longer apply) and scavenging. It’s very frustrating. I have had to resort to thoroughly wiping down the sink and surrounding surfaces after handling food, or they will be up there looking for a handout. It’s a hard habit to break them of, because if they find anything edible they are instantly rewarded for this unwanted behavior. Also, because they are cats and “one can never convince a cat that whatever he is doing is NOT to his benefit”. Opportunistic little beasts! One of them chewed through the plastic of some ground beef I had thawing in the sink once…

Jennifer you’ve taught your dogs very well :))

Halle is great around food too.
We could be having a pizza picnic on the floor and she’ll patiently wait a couple of feet away without bothering us until we’re done for her reward; a tiny piece of crust :)
Great job on teaching the ‘not yours‘, it’s so useful especially if you have many dogs in the house!

Smiles – cats are a whole other story LOL!!!

LOL! Cats… yeah… cats.

My dogs aren’t quite as disciplined when it’s my husband leaving food about… ;)
