Charlie is now part of the HBD household and family! He’s already made his Twitter debut commentating along with Halle but for those of you wondering what this fella’s all about – with no further adieu, here’s his official HBD Post!
Here’s a very complicated story made not so complicated…
- Last year, our Mom was looking to adopt a little dog.
- We scouted for several months.
- First, a Boston Terrier Mix name Bella was perfect but was already spoken for.
- One month later, we discovered Charlie on PetFinder from a local Rescue.
- We arranged to meet and finally adopted him in Summer 2010!
- We signed off as backup guardians so that he never has to be in a shelter again.
- Mom is Happy, We’re Happy and Puppy has a new home.
- Charlie discovers that he loves lounging in the Sun like a Burrito!
So What Happened Next?
Due to Mom’s unexpected life changes, coupled with Charlie’s special dog rescue needs, we had to take him in indefinitely. We started training and loving him and decided to keep him forever.
He came with lots of cuddles and kisses as well as some kinks. Some rescues have baggage (which is to be expected) and Charlie came with his share, and some of it was pretty serious. He had fearful aggression, obsessive barking and low confidence, to name a few. We knew it would take a patient and experienced owner to get him as balanced as could be. Almost anyone could care for and love him, because he’s ridiculously adorable, but we strongly felt he deserved the best.
Charlie needed a chance to put his bad experiences behind him and learn to tackle the world full on with smiles and wags!
“Hi Everyone! I promise to represent HBD to my bestest ability. I’m learning a lot with Mom, Dad and my annoying loving big sister, Halle!” – Charlie
At first, we wanted to change his name. We just weren’t feeling ‘Charlie’ for some reason. Then, within a few hours of interaction, Asia referred to him affectionately as ‘Charlie Brown’ and it sort of stuck with us. Then a few weeks later we officially named him Charlie Barlie and haven’t thought about changing it since. It just fits, especially if he’s going to be brother to Halle Balle.
Little Chiweenie Fun!
If Charlie the Chiweenie were to have his own hockey card, or baseball card, or any collector card for that matter, here’s what the flipside would say:

Official Name: Charlie Barlie a.k.a. Whinoceros
Other AKAs: Panzeroni, Charleze and Charlie Sheen
Breed: Dachshund – Chihuahua Mix (Chiweenie)
Spec: 15 lbs, higher than ankles, much lower than knees.
Age: About 18 months old, spirit of a baby-la-la.
Super Powers: Quick Learner, Butt Sniffing, Very Affectionate and Loving, Power Barker, Snoop and Softie.
Interesting Traits that Need Work: Fearful Aggressiveness towards Some Dogs, Paranoid Barking, Low Self Esteem, Bossy Boy.
Charlie is the most incredible little dog! In the house, he’s a well-mannered loving pup that loves to play fight and occasionally argue with this big powerful Weim Sister! He’s very attentive and doesn’t cause any trouble. He’s already part of the HBD training regimen and has learned many cues (thanks to some clicker training for dogs), basic obedience commands and tricks to help him enjoy his days. We’ve also introduced him to games and fun activities to help him rebuild his spirit, which was never shattered but slightly cracked.
Outdoors is another story but he’s learning…
At first we couldn’t walk anywhere or see anything without him going into a barking fiesta. Since we’ve been working with him, he’s come around a lot and can take hourly walks without barking, except when he sees another dog, which we plan to deal with some calculated counter-conditioning in the spring. His in-house training has really helped him understand us better and to listen (most of the time) more attentively. He is a LOT of work and we’re doing our best to help him develop into a happy confident dog. We don’t have his entire history so it can be difficult but he definitely has the chops and is showing incredible passion and interest in everything around him.
“OK, I’ve accepted Charlie with open paws cause he’s learning to understand who the resident boss dog is!” – Halle
We’re a little biased against little dogs cause we just LOVE Big Breeds. Before you shoot, it’s a preference thing! Charlie is really winning us over with all his G.I. Joe-Commando-Action-Hero-Turbo-Dante antics!
Charlie and Halle make the goofiest duo – Weim and Chiweenie tackling the world together. They make us laugh all day, every day, mostly cause we poke fun at them all the time – they make it so easy and fun!
OK Charlie, you’ve been HDB’d… love you Pups!
Thanks for reading and welcoming our lil’ guy – send him your inspiring wishes and good word in the comment section below. Share your rescue dog experiences, good and bad… you know we want to hear from you!
“Hey! Wait a minute… where’s my official Collector Card?” – Halle

He’s cute! I met a chiweenie last week and she was just as adorable! I’m glad you ended up adopting this little guy. He’ll fit in great! He is one lucky dog to have such knowledgeable and loving owners. Plus he has a dog friend to show him the ropes!
And spell check, what do you mean chiweenie is not a word? :)
Thanks Lindsay :)
He truly has a sweet soul and he’s such a handsome fella! He’s been with us for almost 1 year and he’s improved so much … but we still have a LONG way to go with him. We have to take super baby steps when it comes to socializing him to the world. We honestly didn’t think it would take him so long to desensitize him to certain things like neighborhood dogs and people with long winter coats. Some of his fear are VERY deeply rooted. He REALLY must have been through some very tough times during his critical learning phase … poor little guy! Well he’s in good hands now :)
Spell check is a fool :)
Wags to Ace!
